recent Thames Reach Work Ready Programme helped 24 rough sleepers and homeless day
centre users by providing a range of activities developed to help people get
back into work.
The Work Ready
Programme consisted of a six-day course, including a team building weekend at
an activities centre in the Chilterns held in late March.
followed by workshops at training rooms in St Pancras Hospital – delivered by
volunteers from management consulting firm McKinsey & Company – on CV
writing, interview skills, IT and budgeting.
also opportunities to gain qualifications in first aid, food hygiene, and health
and safety, and to visit the offices of McKinsey & Company and supermarket chain
included rough sleepers being helped by Thames Reach’s outreach services and
homeless people using the Camden Spectrum day centre.
The week was
rounded off by a graduation ceremony attended by 16 of the participants.
The Work Ready
Programme was established in 2013 through a partnership between Thames Reach
and McKinsey & Company and volunteers from a range of organisations have
helped to deliver it including Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation
Trust, KPMG and Tideway.
the Thames Reach lead worker who runs the Work Ready Programme, said: “Despite
the enormous challenges all the participants faced outside of the programme,
they showed incredible commitment and enthusiasm. Throughout the week we saw a
change in people as they started to gain confidence and bond as a group.
volunteers found the experience very moving and gained a new perspective on
homelessness, which will leave a lasting impact.”

The next Work
Ready Programme is beginning in June and will be for former rough sleepers now
housed in their own flats and being supported by Thames Reach’s Tenancy Sustainment
