Rebuilding life with support from Hounslow Reach

Christopher overcame financial struggles and regained confidence—now, he hopes to help others do the same.

When life takes an unexpected turn, the right support can make all the difference. For Christopher, that support began through a service in Hounslow, which Thames Reach later took over and now runs as Hounslow Reach. The service provides advice and assistance to residents of the London Borough of Hounslow, helping people regain stability in difficult times.
Christopher’s challenges began after caring for his elderly mother, which left him emotionally drained and financially strained. “I was in debt, depressed, and barely wanted to leave the house,” he recalls. He was first referred to a local service in 2019, where he began working closely with Vadim, a support worker who helped him get his life back on track.
When Thames Reach took on the contract, continuing the service under the name Hounslow Reach, Vadim joined our team and continued working with Christopher in his journey towards rebuilding his life.
Step-by-step support
“Vadim met me for coffee, encouraged me to get out, and helped me manage my finances,” Christopher explains. With Vadim’s help, he tackled his debts and gradually rebuilt his life. A significant step in this journey was securing a new washing machine, a seemingly small but vital part of regaining control over his daily routine.
As Christopher’s confidence grew, Vadim continued to support him by helping him access essential benefits, such as pension credits and Personal Independence Payment, which were vital for managing his osteoporosis. Reflecting on the support he received, Christopher says, “If it wasn’t for people like Vadim, I don’t know what I would have done.”
Looking ahead and giving back
Although health conditions have prevented Christopher from going back to work, he is now considering giving back by volunteering. “The most important thing is knowing you’re not alone,” he says. “This service has been there for me when I needed it, and I want to do the same for others.”
Hounslow Reach’s work goes beyond individual support; it helps prevent bigger problems. “This service is a vital stopgap. It helps people before they end up in hospital or worse,” Christopher notes.
