A year on: how Graham is continuing to rebuild his life

A year after sharing his story, Graham is continuing to rebuild his life with support from Thames Reach

Just over a year ago, we shared Graham’s story—his journey through addiction, the heartbreak of losing his partner, and over a decade of homelessness. At that time, he had recently moved into Thames Reach Greenwich, one of our supported accommodation services, and was beginning to take steps towards recovery and stability.

Today, Graham’s life looks very different.

“I wake up in the morning and actually enjoy life now,” he says.

Finding support

Graham spent a total of twelve years homeless, with a short period of stability when he lived in a caravan with his partner. After she passed away, he struggled to cope and found himself back on the streets. Things began to change when he was referred to Thames Reach Greenwich, where he received structured support with housing, health, and daily life.

“If it weren’t for them, I’d be in a much worse place,” he says. “They’ve helped me sort my life out.”

Rebuilding health and routine

Since moving into supported accommodation, Graham has remained drug-free and has been focusing on improving his physical and mental health. He’s now receiving regular care for COPD and has quit smoking—an important step in managing his condition.

“They’re giving me a gym pass, which will help with my breathing,” he says. “I know there’s no cure, but I can manage it.”

One of the most meaningful changes has been reconnecting with his family.

“I’ve got my kids and granddaughter in my life now,” he says. “Before, everything was just about getting through the day. Now, I think about them first.”

Looking ahead

Graham is now preparing to move into his own one-bedroom flat. With continued support from the team at Thames Reach Greenwich, he’s building a routine, learning to manage his health, and beginning to address things he hadn’t faced before.

“I never dealt with things properly before,” he says. “Now, I’m getting help with that.”

While the journey hasn’t been easy, Graham is proud of how far he’s come and remains hopeful about the future.

“I appreciate what I have now,” he says. “I’m in a much better place.”

Thames Reach helps people like Graham rebuild their lives.
