6 ways to help people sleeping rough this winter
The number of people sleeping rough on London’s streets has hit a record high, with over 4,700 seen in the past three months. As winter approaches, the risks for those rough sleeping are even more urgent. Here are some ways you can help.
1. Find local support
Search for day centres run by your council where they could go to take a hot shower or stay warm during the day.
2. Check if they need help
If you see someone who looks like they need emergency help, either ask them or call the emergency services.
3. Ask if they need anything
Many people sleeping rough feel invisible, so if you feel comfortable doing so, say hello and ask if they need anything, like a hot drink.
4. Tell Streetlink
Make a detailed referral at Streelink. An outreach team will aim to find and approach them within 24 hours to provide support.
5. Volunteer for us
Give your time going out at night with our experienced outreach workers, helping to find and engage people sleeping rough.
6. Donate
One of the quickest and most effective ways you can help people rough sleeping is to give a donation to Thames Reach.
“It’s very dangerous to sleep on the streets. When the weather gets extremely cold, this puts people rough sleeping at an even greater risk. They can die. Sadly, hundreds of people die each year on the streets.”
Alisha, Thames Reach Outreach Worker
