A new start for Benny and Casper at Acre Lane

See how Benny’s journey with his loyal dog, Casper, has transformed his life at Thames Reach’s Acre Lane hostel

A new start for Benny and Casper at Acre Lane

Benny has been living at Thames Reach’s Acre Lane hostel in south London for six months. He shares his room with his loyal dog, Casper. Benny’s path to Acre Lane wasn’t straightforward. After losing his previous dog, which he said had helped him keep clean from drugs for 13 years, Benny experienced a difficult period. “When my dog died, I was alone. I relapsed, lost my job, my house, and my motorbike. I lost everything,” Benny recalls.

Struggling with his loss and falling back into addiction, Benny realised he needed another dog to help him stay sober. He found Casper and rescued him, but initially couldn’t take him in because his previous temporary accommodation didn’t accept pets. Casper stayed with another person until Benny moved to Acre Lane. “When they told me they accept dogs here, I brought him in,” Benny says. Having Casper with him has been transformative, helping Benny stay focused and responsible.

Casper is more than just a pet to Benny. He’s a source of stability and motivation. “Now, with him, I’m not perfect, but all the money I have, I spend for him. I prefer not to have money in my pocket because it’s about temptation. With him, I take responsibility.” Benny spends his days actively engaging with Casper, going out for walks and playing together, which keeps him grounded and occupied.

Allowing pets in hostels is crucial because many people experiencing homelessness have long-standing bonds with their animals. Pets provide emotional support and companionship, which can be essential for mental health and stability. For Benny, Casper is a lifeline. “If he’s happy, I’m happy.”

Acre Lane and two other Thames Reach hostels are proudly StreetVet accredited. This scheme ensures that pets like Casper receive essential veterinary care and other support services, allowing residents to focus on their recovery without worrying about their pets. Gareth Bowen, Lead Manager at Acre Lane, said, “We are pleased to partner with StreetVet and give our residents the assurance that their pets will be well cared for.”

Benny’s plans are now centred around finding employment that accommodates caring for Casper, such as delivery jobs that would allow his dog to accompany him in the van, setting them on a path towards a more stable and independent life.
